MI COBIJA

A Community Project Serving the Homeless in Chicago

Hecho con cariño, a passion project I hosted in collaboration with Prospanica Chicago, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Healthy Hood Chicago, Mekatos Colombian Bakery, and local Artists.

86,324 Chicagoans were homeless in 2017 according to the most current census data.

Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) provides a bi-annual estimate of the homeless population in Chicago throughout the course of the year. The definition of homelessness includes people who are living “doubled-up,” which means staying with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship.

A total of 20,779 minor children were experiencing homelessness. According to data from the American Communities Survey, 28% identified as Latino.

MI CASA: A LIVE INSTALLATION

A mixed media installation using materials often repurposed by the homeless population to make homes or shelters. Utilized as a medium for community service. The piece actively changed as we collectively contributed. Special thanks to everyone who participated and donated. In particular, my dad who helped me construct the whole project. I’ll look back one day and cherish these moments.

Curated, with love, by Nadia E.
